Introduction: Dive with the World’s Largest Fish

Koh Tao, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is a premier diving destination known for its vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and — for the lucky few — encounters with the majestic whale shark (Rhincodon typus). This article covers key facts about whale sharks and explains when and where you’re most likely to spot them around our island.

What Is a Whale Shark?

Despite the name, whale sharks are not whales — they’re the largest species of shark, and also the largest known fish in the ocean.

  • Scientific name: Rhincodon typus

  • Size: Typically 8–12 meters (up to 18 m reported)

  • Weight: 15–20 tons

  • Diet: Plankton, small fish, krill — filter feeders

  • Behavior: Slow-moving, non-aggressive, completely harmless

Their wide, flat heads, enormous mouths, and beautiful pattern of white spots make them unmistakable. Though they possess over 3,000 tiny teeth, they do not bite or chew — they filter-feed by swimming with their mouths open.
Whale sharks are Endangered, according to the IUCN, making every sighting both special and meaningful in terms of conservation.

📍 Where to See Whale Sharks in Koh Tao

Whale sharks are migratory, often traveling through tropical waters in search of plankton blooms. Around Koh Tao, they are most commonly seen at these dive sites:

  • Chumphon Pinnacle

  • Southwest Pinnacle

  • Sail Rock

  • Hin Wong Pinnacle

  • Tanote Bay (occasional sightings)
